SEO is link building – quality content is great, and it’s an essential component in any marketing strategy, but there are hundreds, thousands, even millions of quality posts out there which never get read, and the reason why is simple to understand: link building.

I would go as far as to say that link building should comprise about 70% of all the activity you perform on your SEO campaign. Google looks to links like votes: each site which links into your site is essentially submitting a vote in favour of your site. Some votes are stronger than others, but put simply the more votes you have then the higher your website will rank for a range of its key terms.

So, without further ado, let’s look at some novel ways you can build links to your website, and attract other people to link to you:

#1: Vary Your Anchor Text:

This is a mistake which is really simple to make. Google is always on the lookout for a “natural link profile” – submitting hundreds of links, all at once, to hundreds of worthless article directories and using the same anchor text over and over again doesn’t really give off the most “natural” of impressions.

You should ideally vary your anchor text as much as possible. For example, if you want to rank for the term “Washing Machine Repair”, then consider using the anchor text variations “Washing Machine Repairs”, “Laundry Repairs”, “Washer Repair” and so on. Don’t worry about being too specific – all of the aforementioned anchor text examples will help contribute to improving your ranking for “washing machine repair”.

#2: Diversify Your Link Profile:

This is another mistake which many webmasters make when they first start experimenting with SEO. A diverse link profile is one where the links pointing into a site come from many different sources e.g. blogs, directories, article directories, social bookmarking websites, press release sites, news sites and so on. All of this diversity will help give your backlink profile a more natural appearance.

#3: Zemanta:

This is a service which has grown like wildfire over the last year. Zemanta will publish a feed of sites which are relevant to content you happen to be writing at any given time – these sites will appear in a resource box while you are creating a post. The obvious benefit here is that a blogger or webmaster may choose to link to you if your post is interesting enough to catch their eye.

#4: PageRank – is it important?

If you’re going to take anything from this article, try and remember the following concepts: authoritativeness, relevance and trust. All of these ranking factors exist independently of the much sought after PageRank value.

PageRank, quite simply, is a massive topic and it’s possible to write thousands of words on the subject. However, all you really need to know is that it’s far from being the be all and end all of Search Engine Optimisation. For example, acquiring a link from a PR0 page on the BBC.co.uk is far more valuable than acquiring your tenth PR2 directory submission – the BBC.co.uk is after all, a very authoritative resource.

Another thing you should keep in mind is that PageRank, as the name suggests, is assigned at the page level – the PageRank value assigned to the homepage is not universal across the entire website.

This post will show you the basics of a backlink strategy that works for me frequently. It’s really a way to set up a foundation of stable backlinks to much of your site and then promoting these particular backlinks in which will 1) Increase backlinks to most of your site, 2) Improve your standing in the Google listings (SERPs), and, consequently, 3) Get more traffic to your site.

I don’t think there’s anything special about how this works with the exception that it will take a little research, work, your persistence, and time. This really is something that’s not really talked about on all those long form sales letters that happen to be promoting the next new thing.

Sure, we all want instant success with somethings. But, with all the search for instant success, we sort of lose track to the fact that there is next to nothing all that magical about building backlinks. You only need to post content to the web that points back at the place you would like it to.

However, the approach that I am using takes a different approach than the typical backlink strategies like linkwheels and the like. The reason being it effectively shields your primary site from being banned or sandboxed by Google because of too many backlinks that are built too quickly.

While Google doesn’t come right out and say it, everyone has some suspicion that they evaluate the rate of back link building that goes on on any particular website as an indicator of it being a legit site or maybe a potential can of spam.

I don’t really know anyone who wants to put out the time consuming process of setting up a money site, then get the thing “de-indexed” because you’re trying for too many website visitors to the site too quickly. I sure don’t.

The main strategy is to build 2 concentric rings of specific websites around most of your site. The The inner ring will link directly to your money site. The second, or, outer ring, with a lot more backlinks will in fact point to the webpages in the first or inner ring. The idea should be to actually have a lot more links out in the second ring pointing back to the sites that directly point to your money site. Clear as mud?

In order to build my inner ring I began by submitting to article directories first. Then I added articles on blogging platforms, doc sharing sites, and Squidoo and a Hubpage or two. I made sure that I linked back with anchor text to specific pages on my primary website. I didn’t do any linking between these properties except on Squidoo, where I posted RSS feeds at the base of my lenses

After that ring was in place, I built links to it by submitting the specific URLs to bookmarking sites, submitting the RSS feeds to aggregators, and marketing with articles to a blog network and article directories.

Using this technique is a lot easier if your linking strategy is written out ahead of time and if you keep track your progress. A simple spreadsheet or piece of notebook paper will actually do the job. What you do is keep track of each URL that you build so that you know which to link to and which to bookmark. Just check off each step as it’s completed and move on to the next.

SEO Link Building – Link Building Techniques

The shift from outbound marketing to inbound marketing is happening as we speak. People are not as ready to be sold to as they were a few years ago. If we want something, we go out and find it.

One of the major inbound marketing techniques is SEO (search engine optimisation). This consists, in its crudest form, of relevant on-page content and meta-data coupled with high quality backlinks which act as a vote of recommendation.

But as time goes on, and more and more people are building backlinks for the single purpose of SEO, will Google still consider this as a vote of excellence or as a self-serving activity? How will Google differentiate between those backlinks that are created only to build up a website’s page rank and those that are actual recommendations?

A few years back, Google introduced the ‘nofollow’ tag. Its intention was to stop spammers commenting on blogs just to get a backlink rather than social participation. A ‘nofollow’ can be attributed to any hyperlink and means that the Google Bots are unlikely to crawl it to find your website. They appear now on most blogs and forums meaning that most backlinks that are created in this way are for the purpose of user traffic rather than an actual backlink.

Even reciprocal links do not have as much weight as a one-way link so asking for a link exchange has lost its appeal as Google gets smarter.

So how do we build backlinks ourselves, showing Google that our websites are important without being considered spam?

One answer is article marketing. Article marketing is more than just getting a backlink to your website. It is an opportunity for other people to see it, like it and republish it – building you more backlinks and spreading your company name further.

If someone comes across your well written, attention grabbing article that stands out from the crowd and tells their friend or colleague about it – that’s better than adding another backlink to your collection.

You still get the opportunity to self-promote in the author box or resource box so you do get a backlink from most article submission websites. By convincing other people to republish your article on social bookmarking sites or through social media, the page rank of your page will go up as well, meaning your backlink has even more weight.

Anyone and everyone can build a backlink by commenting on a blog, so if you’re doing it, you should assume that your competition is doing the same. Because anyone can do it, the importance of a self-created backlink diminishes.

This isn’t to say that we shouldn’t be taking part in discussions on blogs and forums just because we don’t get a backlink immediately. They are a great way of getting your name out there to others in your industry and a great way to learn.

As more and more people are building backlinks for SEO, we need to find ways to make our backlinks stand out to Google. Obviously the best backlinks to have are genuine recommendations from clients or colleague but these can be hard to get, especially when you’re starting up.

Because an article provides information to the user as well as a backlink to your website, it is a better backlink to have and it gives you the chance to build up credibility for you and your company.

Backlinks are one-way or two-way connections that direct from one website to another. The backlink is sometime referred as the lifeblood of search engine rankings. There are other factors used to determine ranking but backlinks still appear to be a major component in the search engine ranking process.

The one-way backlink leads in one direction only. For search engine ranking many search engine optimization (SEO) experts believe one-way, inbound backlinks have greater value. One reason is that quality, one-way backlinks are more difficult to obtain. Two-way or reciprocal backlinks will lead in both directions and can have less ranking benefits.

When considering backlinks, selecting high quality, well established websites that are themselves high ranking is best for improving your search engine ranking. Also, the websites must be relevant to each other. Backlinks from a poor quality or unrelated sites may have a limited or no benefit to your search engine ranking.

The more backlinks a website contains the higher it can rank. A larger number of backlinks are like being more popular.

This popularity can equate to a higher search engine ranking. Numerous, well placed backlinks can be as good as using the correct keywords or paid advertising.

There are several suggestions for getting the best backlinks pointing to your website. Article submissions is one of the top Internet marketing strategies for gaining backlinks. The articles need to be informative and relevant to your website. With submission to the right article directories your website can gain credibility and you get viewed as an expert in your niche. Also, your articles will contain information about the author and links to your website in the resource box section usually appearing at the bottom of the article.

Commenting on relevant blogs and forums can create backlinks to your website. The comments should offer informative and useful content. Additionally, there is the opportunity to interact with other bloggers and forum members. This gives the added possibility of monetizing these relationships over time. To add comments to blogs and forums you must create a profile along with a signature containing your link.

Participating on social media sites is a related strategy but must be done correctly. Backlinks are best not included in your feeds or URL profile boxes. A link can be added in most bio boxes to achieve a backlink. By syndicating your writing you can earn backlinks on updates to your web feeds through the RSS aggregators.

Social bookmarking is another strategy but somewhat more dicey. There are hundreds of social bookmarking sites.

These websites are used to manage information about different topics and niches. The sites accept content which can include information, photos, bookmarks and backlinks. Some social bookmarking websites are ignored by the search engines resulting no impact on ranking.

Submitting a website to an Internet directory like Open Directory can lead to creating quality backlinks. The submissions are reviewed by live editors and may take some time before search engine ranking results are evident.

The backlinks to your website can be searched using Google or Yahoo! by simply typing your domain name or website page address after “link:”. This will pull up lists of websites with backlinks to your domain or website pages.

The ultimate goal of backlinks is to produce greater web traffic meaning more visitors to your website. Having relevant, high quality backlinks means a higher ranking and increases your chance of generating traffic.

Backlinks are very important for the success of a website. Creating backlinks is just the start. The main struggle comes when one tries to increase backlinks. Just creating a couple of backlinks will not bring in traffic nor will it help the PR of the website. For those who are not aware, PR or PageRank determines where the website stands in terms of reputation and credibility. There are a set of algorithms used by Google to determine the PR of a particular site. The whole process revolves around number of places your site is shown in during search results. Thus, the more the number of backlinks you have, the better PR your website will get. This is the whole reason why you should increase backlinks to your website.

One more thing to be kept in mind when you plan to increase backlinks to your website is the quality of the links. If the quality is great, you’ll be ranked two-three fold better than if the quality id mediocre or low. Hence, to increase backlinks, a well planned strategy is required that will automatically help you boost the traffic to your website.

There are quite a few ways by which one can increase backlinks to their site. Writing quality, unique articles remains the best way to not only increase backlinks but increase quality backlinks that, as mentioned above, are very essential and high rated. Article directories are really high rated and are given a lot of weightage by search engines. Needless to mention, if your backlinks are present in articles submitted to these directories, the PR will increase automatically. Writing articles for such directories and adding your link in the resource box is all that you have to do.

Video marketing is another way to increase backlinks. All you have to do is, upload a video and add the link along with the description. Taking aid of social networking sites is also a great option. Just like articles, you can comment on blogs. But make sure your website has some relevance to the blog you are commenting on and posting your link. Forum posting is also a good option.

All this may seem quite easy to do but in fact, it is very laborious. Creating a couple of backlinks is fine. But when you want to increase backlinks, it is very arduous and time taking.

I’d like to answer the age old question “how to search for backlinks”. If you’re an affiliate marketer, a blogger, or just a website owner – building backlinks is essential to the survival and profitability of your website.

Searching for backlinks actually isn’t that difficult. You see, it’s all about keywords. What words are your customers using when they search in Google or other search engines? The first part when you search for backlinks, is identifying the specific keywords, for example ‘how to search for backlinks’ – and then you can start uncovering websites that are related and relevant to your keywords. I recommend you get specific with your keywords. Searching for ‘backlinks’ is really broad, but searching ‘clay pottery backlinks’ is getting more specific!

1. Use Free Backlink Tools

There’s tons of free backlink tools. One thing I recommend you stay away from is tools that offer to build backlinks for you. Building quality backlinks needs to be done ‘by hand’ in my opinion. Would you use a program to write an article for you, based on a few keywords you gave it? You want to spend some time when you search for backlinks – to find relevant websites, with a specific connection to your keywords.

If you want to search for backlinks, here’s a few free tools BackLink Agent is a tool that will show you how to search for backlinks. It has a great interface and give you lots of choices for the types of websites you can build backlinks to.

2. Find Relevant & Related Websites

As I mentioned, when you search for backlinks, you want to keep you eyes peeled for relevant and related websites. I call this the ‘Two Rs’.

Relevant websites are specifically targeted to your keyword. So if you’re promoting a ‘healthy dog’ product, start looking for websites related to ‘healthy dog’ content. There’s tons of blogs, Youtube videos, and other Social Networking websites that have relevant content that will fit with your product. Learning how to search for backlinks isn’t just about building ‘any’ backlink. If you build a backlink with a website that isn’t related to your product, you’re not going to get a very interested visitor – so be relevant, be specific!

Related websites are similar to your website. If you have a blog about ‘healthy dog’ information, and you find someone with a ‘dog’ related website, ask them to exchange links. Some websites even have a form where you can simply add your link to their website. Linking with related websites is great for finding qualified customers. The people who browse these related websites will find your backlinks interesting and click through to your website. You don’t want to just build backlinks with any website. Being linked with reputable, related websites will help your website’s popularity with Google.

3. Find Relevant Discussion Forums

This is how to search for backlinks – I always start in discussion forums. Forums are a perfect hunting ground for backlink building and for finding potential customers. I recommend using common sense when posting backlink in forums. Keep it to your signature line, never self-promote in your posts, and make sure you add valuable content in your posts (so the admins don’t see it as just filler).

If you want to search for backlinks, I recommend you check you the tools I’ve mentioned and scour the discussion forums that related to your product or website. There are thousands of backlink possibilities, and I’ve seen some backlinks send more traffic than a good Google ranked page. Remember the key when you search for backlinks is to link with relevant and related websites – you don’t want just any traffic, you want ‘qualified’ traffic. You want a backlink that sends you a customer!

Directory Marketing is a little known term which gets kicked around a lot and can be taken to mean different things. Internet marketers would call Directory Marketing an avenue to make money by building many different types of niche directories and embedding them with Google Adsense Ads and making money from it. While this is an effective practice, there is another way to look at Directory Marketing. You can build quality backlinks with web directories and they will help market your website by enhancing your search engine rank and position.

Directories might seem like nothing but a link farm to some, but in reality, a well maintained SEO Friendly web directory can be an effective tool in your SEO arsenal. Why? The reason why is a directory which hand approves listings can create a quality web resource for internet surfers; and Google and other search engines know this. Thus, when you list your site with a web directory, it is instantly recognized as a quality backlink to your site.

What constitutes a high quality or good backlink? By checking the Pagerank (PR) of the directories you submit to, you can guage the value of your backlink. The key is submitting to a wide variety of sites which vary in Pagerank to give your backlinks a natural appearance and not a systematic or formulated look. You want more PR5′s than PR0′s, but there is a reason for the variety.

Variety in your linking plan will help in the long run. Most directory owners are very aggressive about building their own Pagerank and will stop at nothing to reach a higher rank. This is great when you get in on the ground floor of a directory which goes from a PR0 listing to a PR5 in a year. Instant credibility for your listing and a natural enhancement of your site’s status. Plus, you might get in on a site, like the Aviva Directory which only accepts paid listings and has a 14,000 rank in Alexa and a PR6 rating.

List your site in as many directories as you can. The key here is not to do it too fast. Meaning, do not hire a freelancer or submission service and have them submit your site to 1000 directories in 4 days. Google looks at this like SPAM. Search engines will think you are manipulating the system to get a higher rank and then downgrade your site, effectively rendering your hard earned backlinks to mean nothing.

Submit your site mainly to Free Directories, but also use Paid Directories, especially Bid for Position Directories as the value in these types of directories is only starting to be seen. When submitting your site, remember the importance of using anchor text. Identify you site’s specific string of keywords and start with about 5 solid word combinations which fit. DO not just use one word listings. ALway use 3-7 words as this creates keyword doorways to your site via the search engines.

Remember, building backlinks is simple. Just ensure you have a plan and understand it takes time. Backlinks cannot be built overnight, but building them through Directory Marketing will help you build better ones.
