Android’s latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), has been out just over a month now. Since this version will be available on mobile phones as well as tablets, the market has seen a lot of great devices that are ready to take advantage of the new features that are available in 4.0. Many of these updates are simply upgrades to some of the already existing features in the operating system. This article talks about what these new features are all about.

New Typeface

The old font, “Droid Sans” is out and a new font, “Roboto” is in. Roboto is a typeface designed for the small, high-resolution screens that mobile phone and tablet users have and brings a slick, updated feel to the interface.

Spell-Checker

In ICS, the dictionary and spell-checking have been updated for better error correction and word suggestion. They have tried to improve the identification of double-typed characters, missing spaces and skipped letters. Word suggestion will now only show three words at a time in the suggestion strip. Spell-checker is probably the best improvement in this group since it will now underline misspelled words and suggest replacement words. You can also add words to the dictionary if it is not recognized.

Screenshots

Taking screenshots is often an important feature for some users and now you do not need to tamper with your Android device or install third-party apps in order to take them. You can now take a screenshot by holding down the volume down key and the power button. This will capture the screen and put it in your photos.

Voice Commands

Android 4.0 now has the capability to receive voice commands. You can use the talk-to-text feature to give your phone commands or dictate text messages.

Updated Camera

While previous versions of Android’s camera were lacking, there have been some great improvements with 4.0 that were gained with some help from Samsung. The camera was also the area where the most upgrades are happening. ICS devices will now have 1080p video, the shutter lag has been removed, easier photo and video sharing, tap-to-focus, face detection, photo filters, and a photo-stitching panorama mode that allows you to move the camera to take one continuous picture.

Many of these features have been long-awaited by Android fans. There is even various photo editing tools to clean up your pictures and easier ways to share with Google+, text message, Bluetooth, Email and Picasa.

Better Browser

The standard browser is the new Chrome mobile Web browser that syncs bookmarks with other versions of Chrome that you have on your desktop or laptop as well as other mobile/tablet devices. The browser can now save pages for offline reading which is great when you are on the road and unsure of your signal availability. Chrome mobile has been updated greatly for speed and now has the capability to open up to 16 tabs for your multi-tasking pleasure.

Android Bump

Sharing information with other Android devices has become a lot easier with a secure Near Field Communication (NFC) app called Android Bump. Based on the NDEF Push technology, this application will allow two Android devices to share websites, maps, contacts, applications and play games together.

Copy and Paste

Copy and paste functionality got a re-vamp and is much easier to use. You can now move around whole blocks of text.

This update only shows how committed Google is to making Android the top mobile operating system. As you can see, there are many great new features in Ice Cream Sandwich that make it a top contender in the mobile and tablet market. This also shows that we can expect many more great new things from Android in the future.

During the last couple of years, the iPad from Apple has taken over the tablet computer market. In this article I will explain how they managed to pull it off.

The Apple iPad 2, is a wonderful small gadget, with fascinating design, phenomenal operating system, and unbelievable battery life that allows you to use the device without recharging up to 10 hours. It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind packet with over 10000 applications and amazing hardware.

There are several reasons why the iPad from Apple became so popular.

Let’s go into the details:

1. You will get smarter

Scientific research shows that hands-on interaction, with items like Apple iPad, is a lot better for our brains than interaction through keyboard and mouse. The other positive thing is that the iPad interface is easier for us to look at, and that helps to avoid cognitive overload of brains. In result, using the Apple iPad will lead to focused thinking!

2. You will get rich

With an iPad, its easier to stay connected to business, clients and your investments, and you don’t have to worry about having laptop with internet connection all the time. All kind of professional documents can be created with the iPad: Documents, presentations and so on. Some journalists even use iPads to write articles on-spot instead of traditional pen and paper!

3. Help you travel

This is one of the greatest reasons (and probably the best) to own an iPad. You can browse through maps or use the build in GPS to navigate. It’s easy to get rid of fear of flying: the iPad brings some great distractions to the table during your flight: Movies, games, books and music are just some examples to get you started. There is even a specialized app for people who are afraid of flying that’s been developed in cooperation with Virgin Atlantic.

4. Save money

You can download loads of money management apps from the Apple store, so your budgeting will get easier. Now the good news: It is possible to obtain one of these engineering wonders for absolutely free! So you will actually be saving before you get one! This tablet computer can be a good alternative for laptops and smart phones. All you have to is click the link below and fill in your information and soon you will be rocking with your very own iPad!

After all, it’s no surprise that the iPad rose to immense popularity so quickly. It certainly is very unique device, and there was a empty spot in the market for device like this.

However, a big part of the success of this device, were the tremendous marketing efforts by Apple. Somehow, Apple managed to turn iPad into status symbol. When you spot someone with one, people immediately think that the one carrying the device is following his time and doing financially well as the iPads are a bit pricey.

The Apple iPhone 5 marks a break in Apple’s traditional annual launch cycle, which for years has seen the launch of the company’s next-generation smartphone in June or early July.

June 29th 2007 marked the launch of the debut iPhone, which was followed by the iPhone 3G on July 11th 2008, the 3GS on June 19th 2009, and the Apple iPhone 4 on June 24th 2011.

However, we’re edging towards August 2011, and there’s still no sign of Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone. And with so many rumours circulating, we’re still none the wiser as to when it’ll be available, with some sources claiming it’ll land August, with others predicting a November release.

So, what are the chances of it launching in August? According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, it’s looking quite likely. Citing two “concrete data points” – including an iPhone manufacturing equipment supplier – Munster claims that all signs are pointing towards an August release. In fact, having done some of his own calculations, he predicts that the iPhone 5 will be landing on August 24th.

Furthermore, a UK job listing for ‘full-time iPhone Sales Staff’ hints that the smartphone could be landing in just a few weeks time. The temporary position is asking for staff for the period between August 16 and October 29 – suggesting that Apple’s looking to increase its retail staff ahead of a product launch. Likely to be that of its hotly-anticipated next-gen smartphone.

There may be plenty of theories that the handset’s coming in August, but September is still looking like the most likely release date. Multiple sources continue to add weight to the rumours, so how likely is a September release?

First off, there’s Reuters, which is claiming that the smartphone will go into production in August, followed by a September release. Although this is by no means confirmation, the news source cites ‘three people with direct knowledge of the company’s plans’. This is backed up by comments from Craig Berger, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets, which having studied Apple’s traditional launch cycle, claims a ‘September launch is looking more likely’.

The September rumours don’t end there. Swisscom, a Swiss mobile phone operator, has ‘let slip’ that the handset will be released in the United States on September 5th. It adds that it will then be released across Europe on October 5, which is when it will start selling the smartphone. This matches up perfectly with the ‘confirmation’ from a China Mobile ex-employee, which claimed it would start selling the iPhone from September 5 2011.

Although a September launch is looking likely, Phones4U are claiming the iPhone 5 won’t be launching until November 23rd. Speaking to UK gadget-website T3, an employee from the St Albans store supposedly let slip that it’s be landing in November, and will be on ‘similar tariffs to the iPhone 4′.

Although an exact date is still to be confirmed, a September release is looking most likely. A launch is certainly just round the corner, at least, as Apple has reportedly ordered 15 million units of its still-unannounced smartphone. That’s according to the Cupertino company’s component makers, which also claims it’ll start shipping in ‘September 2011′.

Here’s awaiting Apple’s official announcement. Whenever that may be.

Gadgets take much of the bore out of traveling. Sitting for hours on a long plane flight isn’t as mind-numbing when you bring some technology. Gadgets are good for children and adults. Having a few gadgets while traveling keeps the mind engaged, and the boring part of the trip doesn’t seem so long.

iPod

The iPod is a device used for audio and video. More expensive iPods play short movies, but the gadget is mostly used as a music player. Depending on the model, the iPod holds hundreds of MP3 files for hours of playtime. When packing an iPod for travel, ensure you’ve not forgotten the power cable. On long trips, the iPod will only last approximately a day. A USB cable and power adapter are included with the device to recharge the battery. If you bring a laptop, it’s a perfect source for an iPod battery recharge.

Sony PSP or Nintendo DS

Both these gadgets are portable video game devices. Sony PSP and Nintendo DS devices can keep you busy throughout the entire trip. Nintendo DS is great for puzzles and mind teasers. Nintendo provides memory games and puzzles that are suitable for older gamers. Sony PSP is the best portable video game device for action games. Make sure you pack plenty of games to keep you busy, especially when the trip is long. The PSP can also play multiplayer video games. This option is ideal for parents with multiple children or a group of friends who all own the device.

iPhone

The iPhone has hundreds of games and software to download from the application store. Although gaming on the iPhone isn’t as streamlined and convenient as the PSP and DS, the iPhone offers games that you can’t find on other portable video game players. The iPhone also masquerades as an iPod. It plays music and holds several gigabytes of MP3 files. What makes the iPhone most beneficial is its large screen for web browsing. You can use the iPhone to retrieve email and read your favorite online forum while traveling.

Digital Camera

A digital camera is a gadget requirement for any trip. Gadget geeks who like crisp images aren’t satisfied with blurry cell phone pictures. A digital camera can also be used as a mini storage device. When bringing a digital camera on a trip, don’t forget the adapter that charges the device. Digital camera batteries don’t last very long when the device is used often. If you carry a laptop with you on the trip, bring the USB cable that connects the camera to the computer. It’s a great way to upload pictures and create an image archive of the trip.

Amazon Kindle

The Kindle is a product for digital books. Some print companies offer Kindle versions of books, which provide a digital version of any traveler’s favorite novel. The Kindle is bought directly from Amazon, and you can download books as you finish each novel. The Kindle is great for long plane flights, since wireless phones like the iPhone are required to be powered off. It’s also easier to travel with a Kindle, because it is lightweight and doesn’t take as much space in a suitcase.

The advantage of each of these items is the amount of time each device consumes. A long, tiresome plane or car ride using these gadgets eliminates much of the boredom. The disadvantage of these gadgets is the price tag. Most of them cost several hundred dollars, so the average traveler can only afford one. Although they are expensive, just one of these gadgets will rid you of travel boredom.

As more and more mobile smart phones are sold, the buzz around mobile apps gets ever louder. So, every business should rush out and get a mobile app developed – right? Maybe not.

The low-down on mobile apps and mobile websites.

Let’s get the definitions out of the way. Mobile apps are basically small applications that you download and run on your feature phone or smart phone. An app will run locally on your handset and may or may not access services on the web to update and refresh the content that’s displayed. In contrast, a mobile website is basically a slimmed down version of a normal website that’s optimised for the smaller display area that’s typical of feature phones and smart phones. Mobile websites are generally accessed via a browser application on your handset.

Which one should I choose for my business?

Well, for starters, mobile apps are cool and thanks to the Apple iPhone and Google Android app stores, they are easier than ever to access and download. You will need to develop a different version of your app for each major mobile operating system though – about 4 or 5 of those at the moment.

On the other hand, a properly designed mobile website can be viewed on pretty much any mobile that has web access. You can’t do as much with them as you could with an app though, since they rely on web technologies and don’t have access to all the fancy built-in-features that an app running natively on your handset will have – stuff like the camera, GPS module, address book. There’s always a catch.

The best option will depend on your business. We can’t give you the answer, but we can hopefully give you some helpful advice before you go spending any of that critical marketing budget. Ignore the hype, forget about the cool factor, and consider the following important points before making your decision – Need. Audience. Budget.

Do I really need a mobile app or mobile website?

Before starting out, it’s worth writing down your list of reasons for creating a mobile app or mobile website for your business. Think about what you would like to achieve and what you would like your product to do.

Are you trying to create a potential new revenue stream? Are you looking for new ways to promote your business? Are you targeting other businesses or consumers? How do customers access your existing products and services? Will your product display interactive content or will it be used as a static information portal? How often will you be updating content? What type of content will you be displaying? Is your product fun or unique? Will it always require internet access?

We could go on and on but ultimately it’s not a question of whether you need a mobile app or mobile website. Rather, it’s about what is best for your business and we can only give some guidelines.

If you don’t already have a website or are in the middle of building one, ask your web developers to build it in such a way that it will be optmised for mobile. It may require an extra outlay but will be less costly than starting from scratch.

If your existing website is relatively static but would like to enhance your online presence and get the benefits of mobile advertising, consider a mobile website. Site visitors coming from mobile ad clicks will get a good first impression of your business when they are presented with easily readable information formatted nicely for their mobile phone.

If your product is for fun, is highly interactive, is intended as a standalone marketing tool or revenue generator, is designed to be used offline, or requires users to regularly access large video or media files it probably makes more sense to go down the mobile app route.

Who are the audience for my mobile app or mobile website?

When we talk about audience, we are referring to two very separate ideas – the target market for your business and the overall set of people that can actually access mobile apps and mobile optimised websites.

First off, think about your existing customer base and how they currently interact with your business through your website, RSS feeds, Facebook pages, and LinkedIn profile. Since smart phones will only become more and more prevalent, a mobile app or website will give you a good platform to build on existing customer relationships and extend your reach to a population that is becoming increasingly mobile.

If your main aim is to increase your profile and presence in the mobile space, it’s a good idea to start off by taking advantage of existing technologies. If people are using Facebook on their mobile and click a link on your Fanpage for more information, its a good bet that unless your page loads in a few seconds and displays well, they will give up and go somewhere else pretty fast. Bottom line – best to make sure any pages you link to from your social media sites load quickly, display relevant information, and look good on mobile.

The main benefit of a mobile website is it’s large audience reach. A site that is properly optimised for mobile should display well on the majority of feature phones and smart phones that are web-enabled. However, when you move into the realm of apps, things become a whole lot different. Since apps are mainly confined to smart phones, your target audience is narrowed to the phones or platform(s) your application is designed to run on and the percentage of people actively using each platform.

Our main advice to you here is before going down the app route, consider the size of your own potential business audience and find out how many of them are using the 5 major smart phone operating systems: iOS (iPhone), Android, Blackberry OS, Symbian (Nokia), and Windows. By doing this, you will get a good feel for how many versions of an app you should potentially develop.

How much should I budget for a mobile app or mobile website?

Answer: How long is a piece of string? There really is no easy answer to this. It will come down to exactly what you want to achieve and what you want your site or app to be able to do and ultimately who you get to do it. It would be unfair to even give guide prices but what we can say is that any prices you are quoted should be grounded in reality.

If your site is based on WordPress or some similar content management system, there may be free or low-cost plugins available to display the pages optimised for mobile. If your main website was built using recent technologies like xhtml and css, optimising it for mobile should not be that difficult or costly, assuming it has mostly static content. If it has more dynamic content with lots of bells and whistles, don’t be tempted to just replicate each page. Limit your site to the pages that will transfer well to smaller mobile screens.

On the mobile app side, the costs can range from hundreds to tens of thousands, depending on the complexity of the app and the number of platforms it will be developed for. There are sites on the web where you can create basic apps for free but these will typically be limited to a predefined set of templates that allow minimal modifications. Some may also charge for hosting content which is something to watch out for.

If you’re not aware that millions of people are using mobile devices for everything from gaming to telephoning to shopping, then you’re on a different planet. Hello out there!

So, what does that mean for your business? Simple! There are potential customers in your local area looking for a business like yours using their cell phones, PDAs or BlackBerrys to find them.

I recently ran across a report on some research done by a company called BurstMedia founded in 1995. Here is how they describe themselves on their website:

Burst Media works for independent web publishers to provide advertising representation, services, and technology across the broadest and deepest number of interest-based web sites online.

The report covered research they had recently done on how consumers use their gadgets more and more. Some of the facts that came out of the research were that 56% of the people surveyed use their mobile devices to shop!

What this means is that if someone is looking for a business – bookstore, pizzeria, dry cleaners, office supplies, or whatever – on a mobile device it means that they are in the market area and want to buy. If you are present on their device, they will find you.

As the motto of this site says: “If your customers can’t find you on the internet, they’ll find your competition.” Can you afford that? Can you afford to have that customer walk past your door, on their mobile device, following the instructions on how to get to your competitor down the block?

At the least, you need to be on the Google map for your location. Better yet, you could create another mini-website which is optimized for mobile application and have small ads on it. Or maybe a coupon code for mobile users.

It’s the time to get creative. There is too much money on the table to ignore the impact mobile devices can have on your business.

Need more convincing, read the rest of the survey results and how mobile marketing affects your business in this report from BizReport.com.
